Liu worked in North China Pharmaceutical, a large state-owned pharmaceutical company, as a senior engineer, workshop director, key project leader, etc., mainly engaging in research and development of fermentation product separation and purification technology, pilot scale up, new technology industrialization and production management, etc. Currently working at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liu has served as the director of the Scientific Research Planning Management Office and the director of the Public Instrument Center, focusing on the high-efficiency bioconversion of APIs, enzyme-catalyzed conversion, green separation, waste resource utilization and harmless treatment and other technologies.

Liu undertakes a number of national, provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological projects such as the National Science and Technology Major Project "Integration and Engineering Demonstration of Water Pollution Control Technology in the Whole Process of the Pharmaceutical Industry", the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. As the first author, Liu has won one provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress award. Liu has applied for more than 20 patents and published more than 40 academic papers.
